Because my current headcanon is that Jack would have still fallen through the ice and ended up a spirit whose visibility counted on belief. Except the ice would be the Hogwarts Lake.
So through the years he'd be watching generations of students, only able to make them smile with the snow out their windows. That is until a group of three students look up to the battlements to see someone there making the snow...
