I've been trying to work on my colouring style more- this one actually took three days to do but I think I've improved. It's a bitch to do though and the proportions are off. However I'm amused and I think that with good lineart this could come out very well next time.

I'd have made her prettier (ie rounder features) but I liked the sickly look. I also wish I could have done her darker, but I'm still very uncomfortable with racial colouring (as a white person I'm far too stuck in a rut drawing white people. Bad Islay!) Next time though I think I'll work with South Asian skin tones, its a nice warm palatte.

Don't worry we'll have a return to the cute cartoon style soon, I'm just practising for Anime North next year. I need some good art prints to sell.

First time I saw this on tumblr I was really blown away, it's just so wonderful.

Looking at it more closely I saw some mistakes (as you mentioned in your comment). But I'd like to highlight the things that I love about this.

To start, her eyes. The detail in it blows me away, the colours just seem to match, and the highlights make them seem to be alive. Then her hair, one side is very messy (in the wind?) while the other side stays perfect (I really liked the small braid, a nice touch), again the colour just adds to the feeling. You were right that she looks kind of 'sickly', but that is the charm. The sharp features (and shoulders) make her seem stronger, even though her expression doesn't tell the same. You managed to keep that with the skin-tone, the pale skin works perfectly with the purples you used, and it allowed you to use pink/purple in the shadows, which really brought the piece together.

Looking at it now I notice another thing: the little bone next to her clothes, is it a part of it? Just shows that you can still easily miss things, even when you try to pay attention.

You did a terrific job on this, and pieces like this really make me believe that you'll be ready to do commissions soon.

Thank you, I don't usually get in depth comments but this is such a good review.
Firstly her hair, I was thinking the wind was coming from a direction that it hit the head to push one side straighter, but the other would only get residual wind and as a result be more flyaway. However it could also be put down to my own laziness ;)
I do wish the expression had been better, as you noted, I need to work on sharper features without being completely ; however this was mostly for the colouring practice.
The bone is actually part of a necklace, a different part from the outfit.
Thank you very much for the comment! :D
